| 内容記述 | Within the realm of the humanities and social sciences, research on the subject of fashion has not until now been granted recognition as an independent academic discipline in Japan. In 2004 a research group spearheaded by scholars from Bunks Women's University, having received the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, began a preliminary survey on studies of fashion in the age of globalization. Then, in November 2004, leading Japanese scholars who have been pursuing research on fashion in widely separated academic fields were brought together in a symposium entitled "Fashion Studies in Japan." This research program was inspired by a sense of dissatisfaction with the state of fashion studies in Japan. As well as relating to lifestyles, fashion is also a cultural construction, and the study of it has all the elements needed to deserve recognition as a fresh field of scholarship, one that requires an interdisciplinary approach integrating, among other disciplines, cultural studies, art history, literary criticism, anthropology, history of costume, media studies, gender studies, folk studies, and sociology. This paper attempts to lay the academic groundwork for "Fashion Studies" as an integrated, interdisciplinary field of scholarship, one that goes beyond the concept of fashion as a domestic science restricted to the confines of home economics. Its ultimate goal is to carve out a whole new discipline, which will require collaboration among scholars from not just Japan but throughout the Asia-Pacific region. As a first step, it draws on the lively debate that took place at the symposium to describe the current level of Japanese scholarship in various fields relating to fashion, and in particular to identify four issues that will require further investigation. | |||||||||
