| 内容記述 | Throughout the twentieth century, the production, distribution, and consumption of Japanese kimono underwent tremendous changes as the Japanese nation made efforts to be perceived as modern and international. By focusing on its material form as well as representations of kimono in texts and images both within Japan and beyond its borders, this research group intends to reveal how shifts in the design and use of the physical garment and its representation in multiple media throughout this one-hundred-year span were intimately tied to the Japanese nation's evolving status in a dynamic global setting. During the last two years, our research group traveled to major museums, libraries, and private collections in Japan, the United States, and England in order to document changes in the conceptualization and symbolic meaning of "kimono" throughout the twentieth century. By looking beyond Japan's borders, we discovered that the exportation of kimono to Europe, England, America, and countries in Asia resulted in the creation of diverse new forms and a variety of techniques and designs. A few representative examples include: a gusset inserted at the side seams of the kimono to create a wider flare around the hem area, the development of embroidery techniques to suit Western tastes, as well as the recognition that certain motifs, fabrics, and color palettes were highly marketable outside of Japan. These developments are revealed by close examination not only of actual kimono-shaped garments, but also through various media, including movies, magazines, and post cards. In reaction to kimono consumption patterns abroad and within Japan, domestic production and consumption patterns also shifted. The modernization and globalization of kimono culture in the twentieth century, in form, material, and design, was far more dynamic than previously assumed. During the final year of our project, our research group intends to focus on what these changes in the production, consumption, and reception of kimono culture reveal about Japan’s role in the wider world.
