This research was to examine historical fashion and clothing culture in early modern England by referring to the theories of drama and somatic system. The focal points of the research were as follows: the relationship between the clothing culture and self-fashioning in early modern English drama; the genealogy of gallant in early modern English culture; the cultural facets of the handkerchief in Othello. Firstly, the interrelationship between personae wearing uncomfortable dress and their unstable self-fashioning in Shakespearean plays was examined. Secondly, the cultural meanings of “gallant” in the contemporary English drama was demonstrated. Finally, the problem, regarding the representation as well as circulation of the handkerchief which engenders and encloses Desdemona in Othello, was investigated. |
