ディレクトワール期と第二帝政期に流行した「ポンペイ風」の装飾が，『失われた時を求めて』では， 繰り返し流行するものとして描写される。つまり，「帝政様式」と「ディレクトワール様式」は第一巻と最終巻を『ゲルマントのほう』を仲介に連関づける。そして， これらのモチーフが間欠的に回帰することによって， 小説の『時の次元』が支えられるばかりか， ディレクトワール期からプルーストの時代をまたぐ，
