This research aims to carry out fundamental studies on the kosodes of the Edo period in the Matsuzakaya Collection. The collection, which was gained at the Matsuzakaya Textile Reference Archive in Kyoto, is composed of historical costumes and textile fragments. To study Japanese clothing culture, it should play an important role in terms of quality and quantity. The collection has been, however, unopen to the public because it has been used as the design resource of the Matsuzakaya Department’s products and treated as the company’s secret. Therefore, the detail is yet to be examined. Under the reorganization of the company, the collection was moved from Kyoto to Nagoya. With the cooperation of the company, we focus on the distinguished kosodes found in the collection. This year, we took basic data of the sixteen works and visited textile-related institutions in order to learn the way to preserve and exhibit them properly in the future. As a result, we made some interesting discoveries: many rare motifs were found in these kosodes, and one of them seemed to match the back half in the Nomura Collection of kosode screens. As we continue to investigate these objects, the unique character of the Matsuzakaya collection shall be revealed |
