In the present study, focus is placed on children depicted in paintings of Japan dating to the ancient and medieval periods. The aim of the study is to clarify images concerning children’s clothing and its significance as well as its background from the point of view of cultural history by sorting out and studying the form of their clothing (technique for making textiles, their materials, color, shape, choice of clothes and other matters. In particular, through a comparison of children’s clothing as seen in such genres of paintings as hand scrolls and extant textile objects for children after the modern period, of which there is an abundance, study is made to see whether there was some type of corresponding relation between children’s clothing and gender difference before the modern period. In fiscal year 2010, which is the first year of this study, emphasis was placed on fundamental research, looking at images of children found in paintings and examining textiles for children after the modern period. Hand scrolls are full of images of children, and further study is required concerning how far it is possible to learn about gender differences from these images. With regard to research of textiles, information concerning textile objects owned by various organizations was collected, beginning with information provided in official publications, and some of the objects were examined |
