The purpose of this study is to make clear what the meanings and what the power clothes- and cloth-making have. This study takes up clothes- and cloth-making in Province of Nanggroë Aceh Darussalam, North Sumatera in Indonesia. This study is examined from the data of the interviews with the people who make clothes and cloth in Banda Aceh and Great Aceh in July and August 2009, and in Banda Aceh, Central Aceh and West Aceh in December 2009. Clothes- and cloth-making have been done by the women in each family since the old days. After the disaster by Tsunami in 2004, people became to have the hope and to feel pleasure by clothes- and cloth-making in the big change of their life environment. The administration of the province sends the women to the dress-making and embroidery classrooms and encourages the women to do the work of dress-making and producing handicrafts. It means that the administration suggests their wholesome life, manages their lives and creates fashion industry and new business. Mixing the areal cultural elements, re-creating new culture of the province and appealing ‘Aceh-ness’ eagerly can be recognized in the field of clothes- and cloth-making in Acehnese society. |
