Our goal was to locate and examine collections of genre paintings produced during the Momoyama, Edo, and Meiji eras, including ukiyo-e paintings and bijinga paintings (‘paintings of beauties’). We conducted research in Tokyo, Tottori, Fukuoka, Kyoto, and Tokushima and made some interesting discoveries. For example, we have determined that the screen painting known as the Soga monagatari in the Watanabe Museum collection in Tottori was likely painted in the first half of the Momoyama era because the costumes depicted on this screen share characteristics with actual garments of the early Momoyama era. Through research conducted at the Kyoto Bunka Museum, we were able to identify some defining characteristics of children’s kimono of the Meiji era. At the New Otani Museum we discussed the special exhibition that focused on the relationship among ukiyo-e paintings, kimono, and pattern books of the Edo period, and noted the close connection between costumes depicted in the ukiyo-e paintings and extant kimono, and also observed the stylistic changes in Edo-period kimono design exemplified through our study of these objects. During the exhibition, we conducted research and held meetings to discuss topics related to the concept of this exhibition. As we continue our research on genre paintings, costumes, as well as pattern books of the pre-modern through modern eras located in various museum collections, we will work toward establishing and clarifying the relationship among these media. |
