On the basis of last year’s production, we researched the life-sized sketches on the three subjects. First, to examine the character of the sketches as a whole, we interviewed a textile designer and a dry goods shop worker, and analyzed the sketch paper. Secondly, to analyze each sketch individually, we reconstructed some kimonos from the sketches and deepened the understanding the original shape then the designer imaged. Finally, to understand the social condition surrounding those sketches, each researcher read the foregoing studies intensively. As a result, we came to understand that the kimonos and that sketches supported the idea established by the 18th century Japanese painter Maruyama Okyo that an image printed on a flat screen can be rendered realistic using light, shadow, and forms. Next year, we will continue to reconstruct kimonos from sketches, conduct researches about the actual condition of Echigo-ya’s management and wealthy citizens’ cultural life, and put together all research results |
