This study was conducted in order to understand how beginner students of the Japanese language from non-kanji backgrounds understand their shape. Similarly, in order to investigate the benefit of acquiring an understanding of the shape of kanji characters, the results of this study and the results of beginner students' mid-term examinations were examined. As a result, the number of groups with two similar characters outnumbered the number of groups with three or more similar characters. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation with the test scores.
