 note = {The purpose of this project is to clarify Victorian English women’s body images and their relations to women’s sense of independence, through the examinations of contemporary women’s magazines. In examining women’s magazines, the members of the project focus on the following five issues: 1. Theatrical representations of women characters (“New Woman”) and their dresses, 2. How physiognomical observations are reflected in the presentations of dress accessories, 3. Women’s outdoor activities and the dresses developed for such occasions, 4. Leisure sports for women and the dresses, 5. Japonism and its influence on women’s dress. All these subjects are important to understand Victorian women, since they reflected their changing attitudes towards their bodies, and eventually played significant roles in modernizing their sense of independence.　The members examine women’s magazines stored not only in Japan but also in the U. K. Such an extensive researche on this topic is unprecedented, and therefore, our project contributes to the advancement of documentary information of Victorian women’s magazines. It is true that most of five subjects mentioned above have been studied independently, but they have never been studied with an emphasis on the intensive research on women’s magazines, nor on women’s (in particular, rising middle-class women’s) dresses, nor on women’s outdoor activities which became widely available in mid-Victorian period. Since we investigate the subjects on a reciprocal basis, we can visualize women’s life in Victorian society. By reconstructing Victorian women’s body images and their conscience, we can find out the following results. 1. The concepts of “New Woman” are represented not only by their provocative behaviours such as smoking in public, but also by wearing a practical tailor-made dress. 2. Women’s magazines use physiognomical knowledge that inner motions and characters can be seen through by the appearances, when they present dress accessories. It is not only when introducing high fashion which humble middle-class readers might not be familiar, but also when briefly mentioning standard outer-garments such as shawls. Readers, in turn, use such extensive information to modernize their self-images. 3. Women who have progressive ideas of occupations, marriages, and their own body images tend to select simple dresses. They believe it is the best way to signify their physical and mental independence. 4. Tailor-made style dresses for leisure sports have dual functions: one is functional for physical activities, and the other is that its clothing constructions enable the dress visualize the idealized bodyline of the wearer. 5. The popularity of Japonism enabled English women familiarize flat structures of Japanese Kimonos. Accordingly, increasing numbers of English women wore Japanese style garments, and by doing so, they began to think about their own bodies., 本研究の目的は、ヴィクトリア朝期のイギリス人女性の身体観と、自立に対する意識を同時代の女性誌の文献調査から明らかにすることである。女性誌を研究するにあたり、本研究の構成員は、以下の５点に注目した。1. 演劇に於ける女性登場人物（「新しい女性」）の表象と衣服、2. 観相学的観察はどのように服飾小物の演出に反映されたか、3. 女性の戸外での活動と衣服、4. 女性のためのレジャースポーツと衣服、5. ジャポニスムと女性服に於ける影響。これらの項目は、ヴィクトリア朝期の女性を理解する上で重要である。なぜなら、彼女たちの身体観の変化を示し、さらに、彼女たちの自立に対する感覚を近代化する際に、重要な役割を果たしたからである。文献調査は、日本、イギリスの両方で行った。こうした広範な調査は類を見ない。本研究を通して、ヴィクトリア朝期の女性雑誌の文献情報の確立にも、大きく寄与すると考える。確かに、上記の5項目は、個別にはすでに研究されている。しかし、女性誌との強い関連からの研究、女性（特に、台頭しつつあったミドルクラスの女性）の衣服との関係、ヴィクトリア朝中期に広く行き渡った女性の戸外活動との関係から研究されたことはない。本研究は、これらを相互関連的に網羅することで、ヴィクトリア朝社会に生きた女性の生活を視覚化することが可能となる。ヴィクトリア朝期の女性の身体観と感性を再構成することで、本研究は以下の結論を得た。1.　「新しい女性」の概念は人前で喫煙するなどの、挑発的行為のみならず、実用的なテーラーメイドのスーツを着用することで表象された。2. 女性誌は、内面やキャラクターは外面に現われるという観相学の視座を、服飾小物を呈示する際に広く使用した。それは、つつましいミドルクラスの女性にはなじみの薄いハイファッションを紹介する時のみならず、外出の定番アイテムであるショールに言及する時にもそうであった。読者はその情報を参照し、セルフイメージの近代化に役立てた。3. 女性の仕事、結婚、身体観に進歩的な考えを持つ女性は、シンプルな衣服を選択する傾向があり、そうすることで、彼女たちの身体的、精神的自立を表象しようとした。4. レジャースポーツのためのテーラーメイドスタイルの衣服には、二面性がある。一つは身体活動に適した機能性、もう一つは、衣服の構造が着用者の身体を理想的に見せることである。5. ジャポニスムの流行は、イギリス人の女性たちに着物の平面構造に親しむ機会を提供した。それに伴い、より多くの女性たちが着物風の衣服を纏うようになり、彼女たちの身体についても考えるようになった。},
