We chose two places, Banda Aceh (the province capitol) with its surrounding area, and a village Garot in Pidie as main field sites, and also visited local towns of clothes- and cloth-making in different parts of Aceh.  The findings are: (1) People in Aceh, especially women, are engaged in clothes- and cloth making not only for their subsistence but also for the source of fashion, pleasure and worthiness of living, and also in some cases for caring for workers’ families; (2) Each of ethnic groups in Aceh, Aceh, Gayo, Tamiang, Anueku-Jamee, and Alas, has own distinct crafts including clothes and cloth and those who are engaged in producing them are supported and promoted by local department of industry as well as by local chapter of national organization. People of Chinese background who live in almost every town in Aceh and some of whom work as tailor have lost their own ethnic traditional attires but have started to have occasions to wear them because of a change in local government’s attitude toward them; (3) An Acehnese head ware for men’s formal dress, Kopiah Meuketob, has been long used to symbolize pride, courage and independence of Acehnese people and this feature gives an interesting case study to be examined on the way of its sustainable production over difficult periods in a small village Garot and the way of its widespread symbolic usage through different types of object; (4) The fact that the idea of fashion has been rapidly prevailing among Aceh gives us a question of how religious life of faithful Muslim Acehnese goes with recent global, commercialized fashion movement.
