Kosode costumes handed down in the Mitsui family are thought to have been produced on the basis of sketches created by painters associated with the Maruyama school of traditional Japanese painting. Investigation of extant examples of kosode costumes and sketches involved in this study has come up with the following results. The places of production, the methods of tailoring, and the textile techniques show features associated with the era between the end of the Edo Period and the Meiji Period. As regards the sketches, the signatures (the meaning of which is different from in the case of paintings, etc. since the signature is not that of the artist himself) and documentary records indicate clearly the involvement of contemporary painters belonging to the Maruyama school of painting. Kosode costumes handed down in the Mitsui family may be considered to have been created with the involvement of painters in order to come up with new designs for kosode that differed from those that previously characterized these costumes, and they clearly incorporate design features associated with painting and images based on sketching from life that is a feature of the Maruyama school. The fact that the Mitsui family was a leading patron of the Maruyama school is closely connected to the background to which these designs came into being. It has hitherto been thought that the kosode costumes handed down in the Mitsui family were created for use specifically by members of this family, but it became clear through this study that there are some extant examples, albeit few in number, of kosode costumes of similar type. This suggests the possibility that the kosode costumes handed down in the Mitsui family were not necessarily special items but were sold as commercial products |

三井家伝来の小袖類は、江戸時代後期の富裕な町人女性の小袖を代表するものであり、円山派の絵師が描いたとされる下絵にもとづいて制作されたと考えられている。本研究は小袖と下絵の現存遺品を調査し、次の結果を得た。小袖類の生地・仕立て・染織技法は、江戸時代末から明治時代にかけての特徴を示している。また、下絵についても、落款や文献資料によって同時代の複数の円山派の絵師が関与していることが窺われる。 三井家伝来の小袖類は、それまでの小袖意匠に新味を出すために絵師を取り込んだと考えられ、絵画的な意匠構成や円山派の特徴である写生にもとづいた表現が顕著である。これらの意匠が生みだされた背景には、三井家が円山派の後援者であったことが深く関係している。従来、三井家伝来の小袖類は三井家の家内用として制作されたと考えられてきたが、少数ではあるが類似した小袖も現存することも明らかとなった。これらは三井家伝来の小袖類が特別なものではなく、商品としても販売された可能性を示している。 |
