The object of our study is the covers (menbukuro) used for the storage of Noh and Kyogen masks. These covers have often been handed down together with the masks over many centuries. They are frequently constructed from precious textiles and take a variety of forms. The choice of textile is significant as an indicator of the aesthetic sense and financial resources of the owner of the masks. Careful analysis of the forms of the covers can reveal important information about the movement of individual masks and collections over time. The purpose of our study is both to collect and evaluate data on covers associated with important masks and collections, (for example, size, form, textile, inscription etc), and to develop this important new methodology in the study of historically significant masks |
