 note = {In the present study, focus is placed on children depicted in paintings of Japan dating to the ancient and medieval periods. The aim of the study is to clarify images concerning children’s clothing and its significance as well as its background from the point of view of cultural history by sorting out and studying the form of their clothing technique for making textiles, their materials, color, shape, choice of clothes and other matters. In particular, through a comparison of children’s clothing as seen in such genres of paintings as hand scrolls and extant textile objects for children after the modern period, of which there is an abundance, study is made to see whether there was some type of corresponding relation between children’s clothing and gender difference before the modern period. 
In fiscal year 2011, previous year’s work of finding images of children in hand scrolls and Buddhist paintings of ancient and medieval Japan was continued. In addition, study was made of Teijo-zakki, a book on ancient manners, events and other matters associated with the court and warrior class. Similarly, with regard to the study of textiles, children’s clothing with semamori, in which pieces of thread are sewn to the back in a tassel-like manner and whose importance was also confirmed in previous year’s study, was investigated. Furthermore, Textbooks on needlework from the modern period were examined., 本研究は日本古代・中世絵画に表わされた子どもの姿に着目し、その服装形態（衣服の技法、材料、色、形状、着装、着衣／裸形等）の整理・検討を通じて、子どもの衣服をめぐる表象とその文化史的意義や背景を明らかにすることを目的とする。とりわけ、絵巻・説話画・仏画等の絵画資料と、現存遺品に恵まれる近世以降の子どもの染織資料との比較検討を通じて、前近代の子どもの服装と性差とはいかなる対応関係にあったのか、あるいはなかったのかということを復元的に考察する。あわせて、有職故実書や日記類、考証書での子どもの衣服に関する言及を抜き出し、絵画資料、染織資料との比較対照を試みる。
以上の分析によって導かれる、表象された「衣服をまとう子ども」をめぐる実証的、歴史的考察から、服飾の果たした社会史的・文化史的役割や機能の一端を明らかにすることを最終的な目標として設定している。},
