<dc:description>In many developed countries, there is a society with an aging population and maintaining the quality of life (QOL) is often of great importance along with the extension of life expectancy for elders.　　Some researchers have suggested that clothing plays a big role in maintaining and enhancing the QOL. However, most of these studies were conducted with a small number of participants, and the number of quantitative studies in this area is insufficient in the older Japanese population.　The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between interest in and standard of selection of clothing and QOL of older adults. In 2010, we measured the dressing behavior and the QOL using a questionnaire. Participants included 274 men and 294 women who were free-living Japanese healthy adults. ANCOVA analysis showed that the QOL assessed by functional capacity, depression and IKIGAI (the meaning of life) was significantly better in people with higher interest in dressing behavior than in people with lower interest in dressing behavior in both males and females. Likewise, participating in volunteer activities in both sexes and frequency of going outdoors in males were significantly greater in the group of participants who had higher interest in clothing and fashion. In 2011, we conducted a questionnaire survey with a free-writing question to understand psychological benefits of clothing in older populations. The survey was completed by 642 people (209 people aged 20-29 years, 217 people aged 40-64 years and 216 people aged over 65 years). These results also suggest an importance of greater interest in dressing behavior for maintaining psychological well-being in older individuals. These findings from both studies suggest that elderly individuals should be encouraged to develop stronger positive interest in dressing behavior to maintain and enhance QOL</dc:description>
